Jayden B.

"Devon is a great person to be with when rock climbing. I went to him as a starter and have excelled in my experience through climbing techniques he has taught me. He continues to teach me rock climbing stuff when we climb. Even if you are a very experienced rock climber he is a great person to have with you at all times while doing that sport."

Alison A.

"We loved our day rock climbing with Devon! He helped our 9 and 11-year-olds hone their climbing skills last summer; he was so patient and encouraging; every moment he was aware of their safety, as well as helping them to have fun. They had moments of frustration, and were acting exactly like kids do when they’re struggling, but Devon’s kindness and calm helped them through those and they had a great success. He never rushed, just helped them to feel a love for the beautiful place and a great sport. Thanks for a great experience!"

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any prior experience?

Absolutely not. One of our favorite things is to introduce people to the sport and watch their excitement as they overcome challenges and work through fears.

What should I wear?

Sorry clothing is not optional, but the choice of clothing is important to having the best experience. The best clothing generally is something that allows free movement, both in your legs and shoulders/arms. Avoid denim, cotton (death cloth), and short shorts. Remember you will be wearing a harness, so having clothing that covers the area a harnes will be is definitely more comfortable. Maple Canyon can be very cold, especially in the mornings and evenings, so make sure to bring clothing that you can layer for when things heat up or cool down. Most hiking, especially to beginner areas, is fairly easy so a sandal with traction (i.e. Chaco's) is a great way to move between climbing shoes and hiking shoes without having to deal with socks and tying/untying.

I'm afraid of heights, can I work through that fear?

Believe it or not, the fear of heights is a primal instinct that we all have to a certain extent. Climbing is very safe when done properly. You can train your brain to overcome the fear of heights by learning to trust the climbing gear, belayer, and yourself. We are very patient with starting low and slow to gradually work through your fears and build the necessary trust to find the joy in climbing.

How far can I expect to hike?

Maple Canyon has over 700 climbing routes scattered throughout various canyons. Most beginner level routes are fairly accessable and flat. Hiking distances can vary but are rarely over one mile. Of course if you are feeling adventurous, we can hike to some of the lesser know crags.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel 72 hours or more prior to the scheduled trip then you will receive a full refund. You can reschedule up to 24 hours before your scheduled trip with no cost. We will not be able to offer a refund for rescheduled trips. If you have an emergency please reach out and we can do what we can to help.

Is climbing suitable for all ages?

Obviously it helps if you know how to walk, but as soon as you can walk, you can climb. We have taken kids as young as 3 years old to adults in their 60's. Don't worry 60's are not the cap, it's just who we've personally taken. I climbed with a 70 year old on the Grand Teton who was pushing everyone in the group. All you need is willingness and we will do what we can to help get you on the wall.

Do you offer promotions?

We would love to see everyone who has a desire to rock climb, to be able to get out. We are happy to work with you on pricing to make this possible. Please reach out and we'll see what we can do.

What gear do I need to bring?

We are happy to bring all the necessary gear to get you on the rock (helmets, harness, belay devices, ropes, carabiners, quickdraws, climbing shoes, etc). If you have any gear you would like to use then bring it along. Bringing your own climbing shoes is a plus to make sure you have a good fitting shoe, but we have shoes available if not. At a minimum, bring yourself. It helps if you bring your own water, day size backpack, preferred snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, and anything else you feel might make your day more comfortable (like a camp chair). Just keep in mind, if you bring it, please plan on hauling it around to the various climbing areas.

How do you plan trips?

Each guided trip is customized and catered to the group or individual. Maple Canyon can be very busy depending on the day and season. We prefer finding crags (climbing areas) that are less busy and have a variety of grades (climbing difficulties) that will offer you the best experience possible.

If we book a family trip, are there age restrictions?

Not at all, we know how tricky it can be to find babysitters, and also understand how valuable adventurous outings can be for a family. Obviously younger kids/toddler/infants can bring their own set of challenges but we have been there done that and have learned techniques to help manage the stress and worry. Contact us beforehand and we can offer advice/tips for things to bring/expect so you can be better prepared.
